The 1996 Mustang is an important vehicle to Ford for the coupe market segment. The SVT Cobra is a member of a series of three trim levels for the Mustang which include SVT Cobra, GT, and Base. The two-door car with its rear-wheel drive is positioned to aggressively fill this niche for Ford. There is strong competition from vehicles from Nissan.

A high point in the coupe market is the Ford Mustang. In 1994 Ford rolled out an upgraded version of the Mustang with three versions: SVT Cobra, GT, and Base. Sales for the Mustang, especially the Mustang GT, were brisk during 1994 and 1995. The improved reliability and the updated styling were responsible for the increased interest.

The Mustang GT is equipped with a Ford 4.6 liter eight-cylinder engine that utilizes 16 valves. The engine is mated to a Borg Warner 5-speed Transmission. This is a long-standing favorite for buyers in the Coupe arena.

In 1991 Ford released the Mustang LX to the car-buying market. The Mustang came in two configurations: GT and LX. The LX configuration is powered by the 2.3-liter four-cylinder engine, which makes 30 highway miles and 22 city. The Mustang competes in the Convertible market segment, in direct competition with Lexus.
