The Mustang Base is equipped with a Ford 3.8 liter six-cylinder engine that utilizes 12 valves. The engine is mated to a Borg Warner 5-speed Transmission. This configuration has proven to be a successful design for Ford.

The Mustang uses power-assisted brakes, with Non-ABS support. The front brakes are disc while the rear brakes are disc. Steering is handled through a power-steering rack-style configuration. The car uses coil and coil springs front and rear respectively.

Mustang Base Statistics

The Mustang is 181.50 inches long, 71.80 inches wide, and 53.40 inches high. It has a wheelbase of 101.30 inches. It is able to seat 4 comfortably.

There is a 50,000* mile, 60* month warranty with this vehicle, including a powertrain warranty of 50,000*/36* miles/months. This is normal for this price range.

The original manufacturer suggested retail price (MSRP) was $17,610 when new, with a dealer invoice cost of an industry-average price. This price was in line with the industry average price for a 2-door Coupe.

There have been several award-winning cars from Ford over the years, including the Ford Mustang of 1996. There are three trim levels to the Mustang, including SVT Cobra, GT, and Base. The SVT Cobra version is one of the more popular options, outselling other configurations. Like in 1995 the popular 4.6 liter has made this a popular choice for convertible buyers nationwide.

Stop and Go

Standard equipment in the Mustang for 1995 and 1996 includes the 4.6 liter engine by Ford, weighing in at 8 cylinders and thirty two valves. A 5-speed Standard Transmission puts the power of the engine to the pavement. The has proven to be a popular configuration for the Mustang.

The front brakes are disc while the rear brakes are disc. Steering is handled through a power-steering rack-style configuration. The Mustang uses power-assisted brakes, with 4-Wheel ABS support. Load balancing is provided by coil front springs and coil in the rear.

Statistics

The dimensions of the Mustang SVT Cobra are 71.80 inches wide by 181.50 inches long. It sits 53.40 inches off the ground. It seats a standard four passengers, with 2 doors. The wheelbase of 101.30 allows for extra leg room for the rear passengers.

The listed retail price in 1996 (MSRP) was $17,610, with a dealer invoice cost of an industry-high price. This price is in line with the industry average price for a two-door Convertible.

Fuel Efficiency

The fuel system for the 1996 Mustang is a SFI system, running on gasoline . The fuel is regulated by an electronic system and is a fuel-injected MFI design.

The 1996 Mustang gets 24 - 27 miles/gallon on the highway and only 17 - 18 in the city. This is below average for a convertible car.

What We Think of the Ford Mustang

The 1996 model year was very successful for the Ford Mustang. The introduction of several trim levels (along with the SVT Cobra version) meant that buyers could find the version that best suited their needs.

The 1996 Mustang is an important vehicle to Ford for the coupe market segment. The SVT Cobra is a member of a series of three trim levels for the Mustang which include SVT Cobra, GT, and Base. The two-door car with its rear-wheel drive is positioned to aggressively fill this niche for Ford. There is strong competition from vehicles from Nissan.

Engine Performance

The Mustang SVT Cobra is equipped with a Ford 4.6 liter eight-cylinder engine that utilizes 32 valves. The engine is mated to a Borg Warner 5-speed Transmission. This configuration has proven to be a successful design for Ford.

Steering control is handled through a power-steering rack-style configuration. The Mustang has power-assisted brakes, with 4-Wheel ABS support. The front brakes are disc while the rear brakes are disc. The car uses coil front springs and coil in the rear.

Mustang SVT Cobra Statistics

The dimensions of the Mustang SVT Cobra are 71.80 inches wide by 181.50 inches long. It sits a comfortable 53.40 inches off the ground. It seats a standard four passengers, with 2 doors. The wheelbase of 101.30 allows for limited leg room for the backseat passengers.

The listed retail price in 1996 (MSRP) was $17,610, with an invoice cost of an industry-average price. This price is slightly higher than the industry average price for a two-door Coupe.

Fuel Efficiency

The fuel system for the 1996 Mustang is a traditional SFI, running on gasoline fuel. The fuel is controlled by an electronic system and is a fuel-injected MFI design. The capacity of the fuel tank is 15.40 gallons.

The Mustang SVT Cobra received a miles-per-gallon rating of 17 - 18 in-city driving and 24 - 27 when it came to long-distance. Being a gas-powered non-green car, this was subpar.

In Summary

There are several reasons why the Ford Mustang SVT Cobra sold well in 1996. Mainly the increase in availability and a marked improvement in quality meant the buying public was more apt to choose a Ford, specifically a Mustang.

The Mustang GT is equipped with a Ford 4.6 liter eight-cylinder engine that utilizes 16 valves. The engine is mated to a Borg Warner 5-speed Transmission. This is a long-standing favorite for buyers in the Coupe arena.

The Mustang uses power-assisted brakes, with Non-ABS support. The front brakes are disc while the rear brakes are disc. Steering is handled through a power-steering rack-style configuration. The car uses coil and coil springs front and rear respectively.

Vehicle Statistics

The dimensions of the Mustang GT are 71.80 inches wide by 181.50 inches long. It sits a comfortable 53.40 inches off the ground. It seats a standard four passengers, with 2 doors. The wheelbase of 101.30 allows for limited leg room for the backseat passengers.

The standard warranty period for the Mustang is 60* months, or 50,000* miles, whichever comes first. The warranty also includes a warranty on the drivetrain for 36* months or 50,000* miles respectively. This is standard in the coupe market. Extended warranties are also available through the dealer.

The listed retail price in 1996 (MSRP) was $17,610, with an invoice cost of an industry-high price. This price is above average of the industry average price for a two-door Coupe.

Fuel Efficiency

The fuel system for the 1996 Mustang is a traditional SFI, running on gasoline fuel. The fuel is controlled by an electronic system and is a fuel-injected MFI design. The capacity of the fuel tank is 15.40 gallons.

The Mustang GT received a miles-per-gallon rating of 17 - 18 in-city driving and 24 - 27 when it came to long-distance. Being a gas-powered non-green car, this was exceptional.

We Think...

The 1995 model began the promise of the Ford Mustang. The 1996 expanded on this success and has proven to be a strong seller in most markets. Even with strong competition from other manufacturers Ford hopes that the Mustang GT will continue to be a profitable vehicle.

There have been several award-winning cars from Ford over the years, including the Ford Mustang of 1996. There are three trim levels to the Mustang, including SVT Cobra, GT, and Base. The Base version is one of the more popular options, outselling other configurations. Like in 1995 the popular 3.8 liter has made this a popular choice for convertible buyers nationwide.

1996 Ford Mustang Base Specs

The restyled Mustang Base is equipped with a 3.8-liter six-cylinder engine that utilizes 12 valves. The engine is mated to a Borg Warner five-speed transmission. This has resulted in an increase in horsepower and torque over the 1995 version.

The front brakes are disc while the rear brakes are disc. Steering is handled through a power-steering rack-style configuration. The Mustang uses power-assisted brakes, with Non-ABS support. Load balancing is provided by coil front springs and coil in the rear.

The fuel system for the 1996 Mustang is a traditional SFI, running on gasoline fuel. The fuel is controlled by an electronic system and is a fuel-injected MFI design. The capacity of the fuel tank is 15.40 gallons.

Statistics

The Mustang is 181.50 inches long, 71.80 inches wide, and 53.40 inches high. It has a wheelbase of 101.30 inches. It is able to seat 4 comfortably.

The standard warranty period for the Mustang is 60* months, or 50,000* miles, whichever comes first. This is standard in the convertible market.

The listed retail price in 1996 (MSRP) was $21,060, with a dealer invoice cost of an industry-average price. This price is in line with the industry average price for a two-door Convertible.

MPG Ratings

The 1996 Mustang gets 30 miles/gallon on the highway and only 20 in the city. This is below average for a convertible car.

In 1995 and 1996 the Mustang Base was availble in the exterior colors of several colors. Additional options were available as special orders from the factory.

Parting Shots

There are several reasons why the Ford Mustang Base sold well in 1996. Mainly the increase in availability and a marked improvement in quality meant the buying public was more apt to choose a Ford, specifically a Mustang.
